Texas State at Florida State
When: 8:00 PM ET, Saturday, September 5, 2015
Where: Doak Campbell Stadium, Tallahassee, Florida

When quarterback Everett Golson went shopping for a place to play during the offseason after graduating from Notre Dame, Florida State offered a challenging course he could not resist: Replacing Jameis Winston 101. Golson, who led the Fighting Irish to the 2012 national championship game, has one season of eligibility remaining and hopes to pass his first test Saturday when the No. 8 Seminoles host Texas State.

"Where we're at right now and the things (Golson) did, it's what's best for our team at this particular time," Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher told reporters after Golson beat out junior Sean Maguire. Golson, who is allowed to play immediately because he earned his degree at Notre Dame and has one year of eligibility remaining under the NCAA graduate transfer rule, steps into a program that has enjoyed a great deal of success lately. The Seminoles won their first 13 games last season - including a controversial 31-27 victory over Golson and the Fighting Irish - before falling to Oregon 59-20 in the College Football Playoff semifinals at the Rose Bowl after winning the BCS national championship in 2013. The Bobcats are coming off their first winning season as an FBS member and feature senior cornerback David Mims, the Preseason Sun Belt Conference Defensive Student-Athlete of the Year.

ABOUT TEXAS STATE (2014: 7-5): The Bobcats were 31st in the nation in scoring at 33.8 points per game last season and Tyler Jones was the biggest reason. The junior quarterback threw for 2,670 yards and 22 touchdowns against only seven interceptions and set a school record by completing 65.4 percent of his passes. Texas State also returns senior running back Robert Lowe, who recorded 1,091 yards and 12 TDs last season while leading the nation's No. 18 ground attack (238.5 yards per game), and Jones chipped in 539 rushing yards to go along with six scores.

ABOUT FLORIDA STATE (2014: 13-1): Golson replaces Winston - the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft - and has a fellow weapon in the backfield in running back Dalvin Cook, who was suspended a month and a half before being reinstated Aug. 25 after he was found not guilty on a misdemeanor battery charge. The sophomore set a school freshman record with 1,008 rushing yards while scoring eight touchdowns and seems a lock to join Warrick Dunn as the only Seminoles to record consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons. Junior Jesus Wilson (42 receptions, 12.5 per catch, four touchdowns) and sophomore Travis Rudolph (38, 14.6, four) are the top returning wide receivers while junior defensive back Jalen Ramsey and senior linebacker Terrance Smith lead the defense.

EXTRA POINTS

1. Florida State junior K Roberto Aguayo has converted 48-of-52 field goals and all 149 of his extra-point attempts.

2. Florida State has won 58 games since Fisher took over in 2010, tying him with Alabama's Nick Saban for the most during that span, and owns the nation's longest active streak of consecutive winning seasons at 38.

3. The Seminoles are 10-1 against current Sun Belt teams, with the only loss to Troy State 36-6 in 1947. ... Florida State and Texas State have never met.
